Clean Out And Clean Up Files

Introduction

The more you use your PC, the more it will collect junk files that you no longer need, taking up unnecessary disk space. It is therefore a good idea to regularly clean out your system, getting rid of the files you no longer need to make space for new ones.

You can also run maintenance programs which can 'defrag' your files – in other words clean up and arrange them in a way which makes it easier for your PC to find. By doing this, you can improve the speed at which Windows runs programs.

The Recycle Bin

When you delete a file, usually this just means it has been moved to the Recycle Bin. If you do not regularly empty your Bin, the files inside may take up valuable disk space.

Double click the Recycle Bin icon on your desktop to see which files are currently stored in there. If there are any files in the Bin that you want to keep and put back in the original place you deleted them from, right-click on the files and select Restore. If you are happy you no longer require any of the files in the Recycle Bin, you can remove them from your computer completely by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon and selecting Empty recycle bin.

You should empty your Recycle Bin regularly, at least once a week..

Remove Temporary Files

Temporary or junk files are left over by programs and are usually no longer needed. They waste space and that may eventually slow your PC down.

Internet Explorer stores many of the files used on the web pages you visit so that next time you go to a site it doesn’t have to download the same files again. However, this can build up over time and take up a lot of disk space.

In Internet Explorer 6 click on Tools then Internet Options. Under the section Temporary Internet Files on the General tab, click Delete Files. Tick Delete all offline content and click OK. When finished, click OK to exit the Internet Options window.

In Internet Explorer 7 click on Tools then Internet Options and look for the section Browsing History and click the Delete button underneath. Next Click the Delete Files button next to Temporary Internet Files.

The System Restore facility is a useful safety feature but it can also use up a lot of space, so occasionally it is worth clearing out the old restore points.

To do this, go to Control Panel, click on System then on the System Restore tab. Tick to turn off System Restore and click Apply, this will clear out all old restore points. Now un-tick to turn System Restore back on and use the slider to specify the amount of disk space you want it to use for future restore points.

Disk Cleanup

The Disk Cleanup system tool allows you to clean out Windows components and programs you no longer need, and remove temporary files.

From the Start menu, click on Programs> Accessories> SystemTools> Disk Cleanup.

The main Disk Cleanup window shows two tabs - Disk Cleanup and More Options. In the Disk Cleanup tab window, put a tick in the following boxes if you wish to clean out these unnecessary files:

  • - Downloaded program files
  • - Temporary internet files
  • - Recycle bin
  • - Temporary files

Click on the More Options tab and you can choose to get rid of unwanted Windows components, remove installed programs you no longer use, and remove all but the most recent System restore point.

When you have selected everything you want to clean up, click on OK then Yes to confirm you want to begin the Disk Cleanup process.

Defragmenting Your Hard Disk

Disk Defragmenter helps Windows arrange files on your Hard Disk in a way that makes it easier and faster for it to find your programs.

From the Start menu, click on Programs> Accessories> SystemTools> Disk Defragmenter.

It is recommended that you read the Defragmenter Help manual before beginning the defragmentation process. Click on Help from the menu at the top of the Disk Defragmenter window.

Defragmenting can take anything from a few minutes to several hours depending how fragmented the disk is, during which time you should not run any other programs.

Disk Defragmenter requires 15% of free space on your hard disk to work with. If you do not have enough space you will need to delete some files. To start the defragmentation process, click the volume that you want to defragment, and then click Defragment.

Tips to keep your new PC running smoothly( In Widows7)

So you got a new PC and it runs on a Microsoft’s Windows 7 operating system. First off, congratulations! Out of the box, Windows 7 is Microsoft’s most secure operating system. However, there are a few things you can do to make your computer even better.

Disable AutoRun/AutoPlay — When you insert a CD, DVD or USB flash drive into your computer, Windows 7 will automatically try to run and play the contents. While this feature is nice, it is also one of the easiest ways for cyber criminals to get you to run something bad on your PC. By disabling the AutoRun/AutoPlay feature, you will be preventing this from happening.

To disable, go to: Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > AutoPlay, uncheck “Use AutoPlay for all Media” and then hit “Save.”

Change User Account Control Settings to prevent malicious code execution — this will prevent bad software from changing your operating system without your permission. For example, “World of Warcraft” needs to constantly update its shortcuts stored within the Program Files folder. If you make this recommended change, “Warcraft” will prompt you each time. If you do not make this recommended change, malicious software could mimic “Warcraft” and make changes to Windows 7 without you ever knowing it.

To change: Control Panel > User Accounts and Family Safety > Add or Remove User Accounts. Select the User Accounts and then select “Change User Account Control Settings.” Slide the scale up to the “Always Notify” setting and then click on “OK.”
Get familiar with “Action Center” — Whereas WindowsXP and Vista had the “Windows Security Center,” Windows 7 has “Action Center.” It is a central place to view alerts and take actions that can help keep Windows 7 running smoothly (like running Windows Defender regularly to remove spyware.)

Install anti-virus software that will be kept up to date for more than 30 or 90 days — Most new PCs come with anti-virus software already installed. However, that software is usually only good for one to three months. If you have a UNM NetID, you can install Symantec’s anti-virus software on your personal computer at no cost and keep it up to date so long as you are a student, faculty or staff member.

First, uninstall your current anti-virus software and then visit http://it.unm.edu/download/ to download and install Symantec Endpoint Protection anti-virus software.

Photographic Tips: Alternative Landscapes: 5 Ideas

This article contributed to Photonhead.com by Frederick Kristjanson of the ACDSee Community, created 03-29-03.

This spring when you begin to venture out with your camera, add some eye-catching spice to your landscape photos by choosing alternate perspectives and compositions.

The first example below shows a typical landscape.

A typical landscape shot.

Here are five ideas to give your landscape photos a little more spice:

1. Get Down: So many good landscape shots miss the chance to be great simply because we lift the camera to our faces and shoot. This may capture the inspiring scenery, but from a head-height perspective that we are all unconsciously accustomed to. Simply getting low to the ground can improve your results and make your photo stand out.

2. Tilt Forward: Enhance the impact of your immediate location in the context of the whole by tilting your camera forward and focusing on what's immediately in front of you while keeping the rest of the landscape in the picture.

3. Shoot Through: Shooting from just inside a treeline or through a bunch of tall grass or flowers will heighten the sense of being in the landscape.

4. Seek Contrast: Include strong elements of light and shadow to achieve a more stunning effect.

5. Frame: Look for opportunities to frame your landscape photos in dramatic ways such as breaks in the foliage or open portals like glassless windows and open doors.

Happiness In 7 Simple Tricks

What is happiness? Happiness is one of the things we never get enough of, no matter how much we have and no matter what definition we give it.

I never heard anybody pretending being happy an entire life. Moments yes, but not a lifetime. Perhaps that’s because happiness is such an intense feeling that no human body can sustain it for so long. I don’t know. Nevertheless, I think I found a few simple rules for lots of happy life moments:

  1. Take the others as they are. Don’t try to change people around you, because nobody ever changes, unless they feel like doing so. Instead of making your friends unhappy because they are not able to live up to your standards, try to adjust your way of looking at them, try to accept their way, and enjoy the good things you saw in them from the very beginning (before becoming friends, there was a kind of attraction between you, wasn’t it?)
  2. Indulge yourself. I know people who wouldn’t forgive themselves for making even the smallest mistake. They think and re-think the moments, blaming themselves, getting angry and frustrated, thus not being able to enjoy the present moment. The frustration comes from the fact that they cannot travel back in time to do things right. If you cannot fix things anyway, what’s the use of accusing yourself and punishing you ever and ever again? Get over the past and live your life!
  3. Smile. Research has shown that smiling and feeling good work both ways. If you feel good, you’ll smile, right? Well, our body is strange, it seems that it has the power to influence the mind: so, if you smile, you’ll immediately feel better. Besides, you’ll have a positive effect on people around you: seeing you smiling, they will tend to smile back to you, thus contributing to a good atmosphere.
  4. Respect yourself. You are your most valuable asset, so make sure you take good care of your soul. Don’t do things which don’t fit into your life philosophy. Don’t give you reasons to hate yourself later on.
  5. Respect the others. It is not always true that you get what you give, but if you give lack of respect, you’ll get it back for sure.
  6. Live the moment. Don’t wait for the most proper time to do something you wish to. Do it now, because the proper moment never comes. There is always something more to wait for, so you’ll end up old or dead and burried before you even notice that your moment never came. Do you want to learn how to play the piano? Don’t wait until you’ll have more time. Make yourself some time, find a place in your schedule and go take piano classes. Do you want to write in your blog every day? Just sit down and write. You’ll see that time will be there for you when you need it.
  7. Give. Whatever you can, be it knowledge, money, old clothes or even a phone call to a lonely person, just make sure you give something every day. This will make you feel like a good person. Helping is in the human nature, so why not following our giving impulse? There are many people who are in need for your help, that you’ll never be refused if you know how to look for those people.

Each of us is unique, but I believe we all share some things, and seeking happiness is one of them. Which is your way of seeking happiness? How do you know when you found it?
